Keep Fishkill Beautiful started this petition to village of Fishkill Planning Board and

Fishkill is a diverse community made up of individuals from all walks of life. A wonderfully close knit community. Fishkill has quaint shops and restaurants, sidewalks and tree-lined streets.

Fishkill residents have watched traffic congestion increase each year, and the addition of this proposed 35,000 SF, 4 story high structure that contains 100+ apartments as well as an at-risk childcare facility (able to accommodate 100+ children) will compound this problem exponentially. The builders are counting on the Village of Fishkill Zoning Board to approve a zoning amendment to create this structure.  Our mission is to appeal to the Village of Fishkill Zoning Board to deny this request.

These apartments are not part of a nursing home, an assisted living facility, or even an independent living community. The only parameter is that one of the occupants must be at least 62 years old. These individuals will be working, coming and going on a regular basis, and living active lives.

It is misleading and ageist to speculate that individuals who are 62 years old will not be leaving their homes during rush hour, as stated in this quote from the developer: "Senior residents do not typically travel at rush hour" or even that "Some of those that are retired will take advantage of the local transportation provided by the senior housing entity off peak hours."

As for cost - only 10% of the apartments are listed as "moderately priced". We question whether "moderately priced" would be considered the same as "affordable". Either way, this translates to 90% of the units being high-priced.

While affordable senior housing is an important consideration for Southern Dutchess, the fact that this developer had originally requested seven variances  shows that this project is particularly unsuited for this location.

Here are some statistics that speak to the affordability of this project for seniors in Fishkill. With these income ranges it is hard to believe that current residents would be able to afford to live in a such a costly complex.

13% of Fishkill senior households have an annual income of less than $10k and 34% less than $20k (Source: Census.gov ACS)

20% of Fishkill, NY residents 60 and over received food stamps in the last year (Source: Census.gov ACS)

The average Social Security Income in Fishkill is $16,420/year (Source: Census.gov ACS)

The median household income for a Fishkill senior is $30,000 (Source: Census.gov ACS)

This project does NOT make sense, and by signing this petition we are charging the Fishkill Zoning board to keep the best interests of the residents of Fishkill and the surrounding communities, including our seniors, as a priority.
