Briarcliff Sustainability started this petition to Village of Briarcliff Manor

Billions of single-use plastic bags and plastic straws enter our waterways and landfills every year, clogging our storm drains and rivers, harming wildlife, and contaminating our environment. A single-use plastic bag, which is used for an average of 12 minutes, can take 1000 years to break down. Less than 1% of these bags get recycled. This is a significant problem in a river town like ours, because Westchester County does not recycle plastic bags, and they end up being incinerated at Peekskill, and contribute to the steady deterioration of our air quality. Paper bags have their own negative impacts in the context of their production and transport. Switching to reusable bags will help us move towards a cleaner, healthier environment in Briarcliff Manor and our neighboring river towns. Other towns that have passed similar initiatives include Newcastle, Pleasantville, Hastings, Rye, Larchmont, and Mamaroneck. We are asking the residents of Briarcliff Manor to support our Reusable Bag Initiative which will eliminate the use of single-use plastic bags  and require a 15c fee on paper bags at grocery stores, pharmacies, and convenience stores in our village.
