Concerned Residents of Big Rock started this petition to Village of Big Rock Zoning & Planning Committee & Village of Big Rock Board

The proposed zoning changes could affect very real change to our small community. There are numerous documented studies showing the detrimental effect a slaughterhouse has on a community.

  • The addition of a custom livestock & poultry processing facility on the property located at 6S706 Dauberman Rd would create an influx of trucking traffic in and out of our town.
  • Increased truck traffic could cause an increased burden of road maintenance
  • The location of the facility would have a direct line of sight to the rear of the middle school
  • The air pollution and smells created by the disposal of waste from the processing facility will  likely be detectable from the middle school
  • Currently the HBR school district is highly rated in the area and is huge draw for residents of Big Rock & Hinckley alike. The addition of a slaughterhouse this close to the school would pose a potential serious detriment to that reputation
  • The creation of a business like this will not bring high paying good quality jobs, rather it will likely bring the contrary- low paying dangerous jobs
  • The water table in Big Rock is very high putting us at a much greater risk of runoff from a processing facility causing water pollution for years to come.
  • The proposed zoning they have requested is 'PUD' or 'Planned Unit Development' meaning that they may do the bare minimum to get the facility running and drag out further necessary improvements

We moved into the Big Rock community for the small town where everyone knows their neighbors and we are all working together for the common good. This is a small community not an industrial area suited for the proposed uses. The addition of an industrial business like this just behind our small town school is not the vision we believe any of us has for the future of Big Rock. Economic growth is vital to progress however it should be measured carefully to ensure lasting economic & social success. A rush to change a zoning and allow this without thoughtful planning and unanimous community support would be irresponsible. Now is the time to stand together and fight to be sure that the future of our small town is a future we can all be proud of.

Please show your support by signing the petition and coming in person to the Planning & Zoning Committee Meeting & Public Hearing when and if a new date is set.
