August Graham started this petition to Village of Arlington Heights

Recreational marijuana will become legal in the state of Illinois on January 1st, a fact. To deny sales within our borders on the basis of preserving our "family-friendly" community is based on false logic. Denying the sale of marijuana will only cause our Village to lose out on valuable tax dollars to do the things necessary to create a desirable community in which to live. It simply makes no sense to lose out on an opportunity to raise funds for our town based on fear and ignorance of a substance that is generally regarded as less harmful than alcohol.

If the goal of keeping marijuana out of Arlington Heights is to protect young people, then voting NO on this bill would in fact go against this effort. For example, in Colorado the rate of minors using marijuana went from 12% down to nearly 8% in the 2 years after legalization. The notion that marijuana will pose a greater danger to the young people in our community is simply a falsehood.

Finally, our country has a long and storied history of criminalizing drugs which has had an impact largely on people of color.  Being family-friendly means we recognize when we have made mistakes in the past and work to not repeat those same mistakes in the future.

We urge you to vote YES and opt into recreational marijuana sales in the Village of Arlington Heights.
