Our desire for this petition is to create change in our community, specifically with the boys basketball program at VRHS. We are genuinely concerned about the impact our current boys basketball coach has had in the past and will have in the future. Over this past football season, we have seen our community band together to support our new football coach. We have watched the excitement from the athletes, the students, our middle schools, and our community. We feel this change has had a positive impact in that we have won our first Region title in 23 years, and it's time to bring that same energy to our basketball program. Our basketball program has been stagnant for over 15 years. We have had numerous kids with extraordinary talent leave and go to other area schools, and the ones who stayed achieved success, but it was due to their athletic ability. Specifically, in 2011 our boys basketball team made it to the Elite 8, but that coaching style was not enough at that level of play. In addition, none of those young men were ready for next-level opportunities. To those with a basketball eye, it is evident that our program lacks proper next-level development. The current regime utilizes a recreational level approach, while the goal should be to get these kids a chance at the next level. These kids are not learning the game in a way that transfers collegiately. Our girls program has garnered far more attention than our boys program. We have seen what winning does for this community. We need the same in our basketball program. In the interest of this community and the future of our kids, we need a change!
