On November 30, 2021 the Board of the Village of Sloatsburg adopted a local law, subject to referendum on petition as provided by New York Consolidated Laws, Municipal Home Rule Law, MHR section 24. The adoption of the local law was to opt out of allowing marijuana dispensaries and on site consumption sites to open locations within the village. Many people in the Village attended the Public Hearing and voiced their opposition to opting out of allowing dispensaries to open retail locations as well as allowing on site consumption sites within the Village of Sloatsburg. Despite the benefits of having access to dispensaries/on-site consumption sites, as sited by the residents of the Village of Sloatsburg The Board voted to opt out of the law irrespective of what the people who attended the public hearing wanted.

Among the benefits of allowing cannabis retail dispensaries and on-site consumption sites sited by the residents of Sloatsburg:

1. Economic benefit as a portion of the tax on retail marijuana will be available to Sloatsburg

2. Safety benefit of having marijuana regulated with oversight instead of it being sold on the street

3. Personal benefit to exercise the right to purchase and use marijuana recreationally in one's own neighborhood
