Julie Pichonnat started this petition to Vigo County School Corporation

According to a report done by the National Center for Science Education in 2020, Indiana public schools received a D grade in Climate Change Education. The report, entitled “Making the Grade”, studied how each state’s public school standards address climate change, and Indiana’s “approach to the reality and severity of climate change as well as the human responsibility for causing it” was cited as “abysmal”. One reviewer commented:

“I must say [the standards do] not meet the needs of Indiana students in the process of learning their foundational understanding of the world they are inheriting and the promising careers and opportunities available to them; this is a disservice to them.”

If you’re a Vigo County resident, ask yourself what, if anything, was your experience learning about climate change under the Vigo County School curriculum. Many of us, students, parents, and teachers, feel that the current standards of science education are insufficient in equipping the next generation with the critical knowledge needed to combat and adapt to climate change.

This petition calls for the Vigo County School Corporation to begin taking concrete steps to integrate climate change science into the K-12 curriculum. On January 29th, the youth-led environmental group EARTHlings will be presenting to the School Board about working together to update the current curriculum. If you care about the quality of education in Vigo County, please sign and share this petition, and if you want to learn about how you can be more involved in this initiative, please email me at: jmpichonnat@bsu.edu

Thank you for making a difference!
