Today, we join and show solidarity with the thousands of people continuously demonstrating in Vietnam against the new internet censorship law and the lease of economic zones to China.

The Vietnamese communist government is poised to lease to China three strategic regions, Vân Đồn, Bắc Vân Phong and Phú Quốc, for 99 years. China will have total economic and administrative control over these zones and use them to militarily dominate the South China Sea.

Over the past few weeks, the public security police have violently assaulted and arrested hundreds of people who peacefully demonstrated against further restrictions on internet freedom and against Vietnam’s law on special economic zones that would facilitate China’s territorial expansion and economic dominance in the region. Government security agents in civilian clothing have broken up peaceful demonstrations and brutally beaten protesters, severely injuring women, children, and the elderly alike. Hundreds who were taken away, have not been accounted for.

On June 12th, Vietnam’s National Assembly also passed a new cyber security law that implemented further internet restrictions. According to the U.S. Embassy in Hanoi, the restrictive new law “may not be consistent with Vietnam’s international trade commitments”. This Internet Security Law, which takes effect on January 1st, 2019, will authorize Vietnam’s ruling communists to censor content, spy on Internet users, and prosecute violators.

We denounce the Socialist Republic of Vietnam for these atrocities. We plead with the leaders of the Free World and the United Nations to intervene, to investigate and to impose sanctions on the communist criminals responsible for the killing and murdering of innocent people. The Vietnamese government should not get a free pass on abusing human rights as the U.S. and Vietnam relationship grows.

Please sign our petition and ask President Trump as well as your Congressional representatives to help stop the Vietnam government’s oppression and human rights violations.
