We were disappointed to find out after moving here that Dare County offers no midwifery care. We would have traveled to seek it elsewhere but my last labor went very quickly and we were afraid that this time we wouldn't have time to travel. We took the care that we received at DePaul in Norfolk for granted.

Pregnancy is not a medical condition. Every "advanced" culture on the planet recognizes, acknowledges, and employ midwives -- and they ALL have lower cesarean rates and infant and mother mortality rates. Home births are the norm, and most women only go to hospitals if medical intervention of some kind is needed -- and I'm not talking about administering potocin b/c the birth isn't progressing fast enough. Women should be able to have more say in such an intimate, personal event such as birth. Empower Women!

There should be more than one option for birth. Fear and control do not belong in labor. Mother empowerment, encouragement and education about her body and the natural birth process need to be brought to the forefront. Emergency procedures need to be reserved for emergencies. Women need a voice in their prenatal, labor and delivery services.
