Correct me if I'm wrong and while I don't know about the horses in Victoria, I heard that some (not all) NYC Carriage Horses are either rescued from abuse or neglect or rehomed from owners who could no longer care for them and without carriage work they might have had nowhere else to go at all.

And to those who think the horse carriage industry is cruel because the horses don't get to decide when they want to work, if the carriage drivers don't own the horses or the carriage business, chances are someone else is deciding when the carriage drivers go to work and leave. If that's your main concern with the horse carriage industry, then maybe you should be advocating for workplace policies and culture that allows employees to go to work and leave whenever they want to.

I am a horse trainer and for over 30 years and when I visit Victoria once a month, I always like to see the carriage horses, I have heard of some people saying how horrible it is etc. I see nothing wrong with it, I went up to the drivers and talked with them about their horses and their care etc. They informed me of what they do, how many hours the horses work and how they care for them.. I looked each horse over, each one was in very good weight, their coats are shiny, which tells alot of their health and food they are being fed. Their hooves were well kept, and have special shoes so they won't slip on the road. During summer months when the horses are working, and in between rides they are waiting under trees to stay cool, they offered water and food thru their working day. I had heard a horse had slipped one time on the road, that is an accident, not abuse or neglect, we slip on the roads does that mean we should be taken off the roads? I strongly support carriage horses

My husband and I took a carriage ride on our honeymoon. It was one of our most favorite experiences! The horses were treated with utmost respect.

If horses are conditioned, trained and well equipped to do the job there is nothing wrong with pulling a carriage. The protesters are using false claims and standards.

These "animal rights" activists have no idea what they're even talking about. They don't understand the needs and care of animals at all. I even saw them complaining about sheep grazing in a field in the rain. What do they expect? Wild sheep with no owners to build themselves a hut?

As a horse owner I do believe that horses are happiest to be working with us and enjoy interaction with people. Please realize that the ultimate goal of those who want to ban carriages is to end all human/animal interaction, eliminating all domestic pets is the end goal.
