Some of the students currently enrolled in the industry upgrade qualification Bachelor of Youth Work through Victoria University have just found out that their enrolment into this course is now dependent on them completing the Youth Work Diploma through TAFE. This is despite having already completed the first full semester of subject units in the Bachelor degree, accumulating HECS debt for these subjects and upon initial enrolment were informed in writing that they were eligible to enrol with a Cert 4 or diploma qualification. This is simply UNJUST to these students and has caused unnecessary stress, disadvantage and further financial hardship to obtain the diploma. We stand by our fellow students and feel strongly that the University should honour their enrolments and allow all students to continue on to complete the Bachelor of Youth Work without having to obtain the diploma.

Our role in the Community Sector is to advocate and lobby when unjust decisions are made that disadvantage individuals, young people and the community as a whole. This decision by Victoria University to not honour the students enrolments, provide clear information about when this change occurred and why this has now only come to light has greatly impacted the morale of the students in our class, has caused unnecessary stress and financial burden to those impacted and is simply not the right thing to do. We call on Victoria University to stand by our fellow students and honour their enrolments, set the right example for how to fix their mistake and take responsibility to support your students to finish their degree.
