Sexual harassment is the action of a hostile environment through sexual comments, sexually explicit language, sexual or rude humor, persistent unwanted sexual and/or romantic advances, or the use of an abuse of power to achieve sexual favors. This can occur in various ways and the offender can identify with any gender. Any forms of unwanted touching or physical contact and/or comments, unwelcome sexual advances and requests for sexual favors even from someone you know or who you are close with can be identified as sexual harassment.
Sexual harassment happens on both sex although, when compared, women have a higher rate of being harassed sexually. In the Philippines, the rate of women being sexually harassed as well as their response to these harassments have been alarming. According to Bartolome (2016), 3 out of 5 women get harassed for at least once in their life and 88% of women who gets harassed range from ages 18-24. The most alarming thing is that 50% of the women who get harassed choose not to do anything about it. According to a survey, majority of women think that it is their fault as to why they get harassed. With the help of Republic Act 7877 also known as Anti-Sexual Harassment Act of 1995, offenders are punished through one up to six months of imprisonment and/or a fine of Php 10 000 to Php 20 000. This is to ensure the safety of those who get sexually harassed. However, as long as victims fail to report the harassments done to them, justice will not be served for these victims.
Raising your voice and standing up to what is right is quite a hard thing to do, especially when you have to cut down the norms that are being practiced by society. Some people may look at you ridiculously for doing so. We have been taught, in our younger years, to just let things go, especially when we are being treated as inferior and weak; but it’s time to realize that we should not let things go especially when it is our dignity and rights as human beings are being taken from us. Women do not deserve to live in fear for the rest of their lives. Women do not deserve to be seen as separate from their legs, face, figure and etc. but they deserve to be seen as whole beings of true potential and power. Now is the time to be brave. Now is the time to embrace your capacity to voice out and fight for what is right and for what should be done. In just one simple action, you can help change the world. Sign in the petition and let’s give women of all ages the right to live a comfortable life. Speak up!
