A Petition from University of Nottingham Students to Professor Shearer Wes
Dear Professor Shearer West,
I am writing to complain about the impact of the UCU strike action upon my education.
I chose this university in large part due to the staff and I believe that they are the university's greatest asset. Yet we have been told that the current proposals to change their pensions could reduce the annual retirement income by £10,000 a year on average.
My understanding is that the university’s representatives, having initially proposed the complete elimination of the guaranteed pension, have refused to move at all towards the union’s position. And as a result, 88.2% of UCU members at Nottingham voted in favour of strike action.
As things stand this university, my university, is failing its staff, myself and my fellow students.
I urge you to agree to resume national negotiations with UCU with immediate effect in order to end this damaging dispute and enable me to get the education that I deserve.
After reading your open-letter, and seeing your comment that the University are taking “actions…to minimise disruption”, I am still concerned that this will be insufficient in light of UCU’s commitment to not replace teaching.
Therefore, based on current tuition fees of £9,250, I could lose £578 as a result of this industrial action. I am keen to hear how, as the leader of this institution you will speak out to encourage UUK to resume negotiations with UCU so as to equitably resolve the pensions dispute whilst also mitigating financial loss to students.
