With the rise of the coronavirus (COVID-19) across the country and internationally, governmental agencies have advised the general public to avoid large gatherings, and educational institutions have implemented cancellations to prevent further infections. Major universities in several states have called for and executed cancellations, and the entire UNC (Universities of North Carolina) system has barred students from remaining on campus, in favor of online instruction. However, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Public School Board has decided to allow students to continue attending school into the coming week, starting on the 16th of March. Due to the compact and overcrowded nature of all schools in the CMS district, the students, staff, and faculty are all susceptible to being exposed to COVID-19. In order to prevent the spread of this pandemic, the student bodies of CMS are calling upon the CMS Board of Education for the cancellation of schools until the Center for Disease Control issues a statement declaring that the risk of this nation falls from sustained community spread to limited community spread. The first and foremost responsibility of elected officials on both the Federal and Local levels is to care for those who have nominated them to be their delegates. Listen to the concerned citizens who have put their trust within you and see the dangers that come from sending employees and students to school. Already in Charlotte-Mecklenburg, two confirmed cases of COVID-19 have been declared in the past few days. Of course, as a community we all wish to see the end of this pandemic, however this can not be achieved if necessary action is not taken by the local administration.
