Veto the bill that would imprison rape victims who receive abortions

The GOP of New Mexico recently introduced a bill that denies a woman's right to choose abortion if she is a victim of rape.   The terms of the bill liken the abortion to "tampering with evidence" essentially forcing the woman to carry the pregnancy to term (the alternative is jail).

A woman's body is her own - no matter what. In the case of rape, women need support and protection from their community, not to be isolated from their rights and their bodies. This proposed law criminalizes a woman's right to choose, rather than targetting a means to prevent rape in the first place.

To force a rape victim to carry her pregnancy to term is an extended violation against her personal security.

Please sign this petition if you agree this bill should be vetoed.

Aviva Shen of Think Progress writes a great article on the contradictory ideology behind this "pro-life" (anti-choice) proposal:  http://thinkprogress.org/health/2013/01/24/1490691/new-mexico-lawmaker-rape-victims-who-get-abortions-should-be-arrested-for-tampering-with-evidence/

Letter to
Governor of New Mexico: Susana Martinez
Please veto the bill that would imprison rape victims who receive abortions.

A woman's body is not social property or legal evidence. A woman's body is her own, no matter what. Objectifying & containing the woman's body as "proof" of the attack fails to address the REAL problem: how to STOP rape from happening in the first place.

To stigmatize women who are rape victims is another form of violence and discrimination against them.

Please choose to move toward a safer, more peaceful world.
