Get the Vermont Global Warming Solutions Act passed
If things continue the way they are, everyone will face the effects of climate change. However, not everyone will be affected equally. Even though they contribute the least to carbon emissions, marginalized groups, especially people living in poverty, will bear the brunt of the damage caused by climate change. 3 out of 4 people living in poverty rely on agriculture and natural resources to survive which makes them more vulnerable to weather related effects that could damage their environment. People living in poverty are more exposed to the health related impacts that climate change is bringing and might have to choose between healthcare and paying the rent or the electricity bill. Even though Vermont is trying to reduce its contribution to climate change and has many ambitious goals, there is nothing making us actually reach these goals and small steps will not be enough with only 12 years before the effects of climate change are irreversible. The Vermont Global Warming Solutions Act (H.462) makes our existing carbon pollution goals legally enforceable requirements. There will be public hearings about the proposed rules and a portion of these hearings will be in marginalized and low-income communities. This will give the public, especially the people most vulnerable to the issue, a voice about the measures put in place. Both Massachusetts and Connecticut have enacted similar laws and have succeeded in cutting climate pollution while growing their economics. Even if we don't notice it, the devastating impacts of climate change have already begun and bold action needs to be taken immediately.
