I grew up in Ventura and still have family there. This statue is far more etched in the hearts and minds of those who have childhood memories of it and would heartbroken to see it go... than it is disturbing to anyone because of its emotional effect on them. The devaluation to the ambiance and the lids of tourist site value is a financial and cultural loss because you would be removing a tourist spot where people visit. This is devaluing your tourist supported city.. A costly mistake like removing the mission or other tourist spots like the cross. Don’t give in or your other sites will be next.
Idolization of a person who did horrific acts should be removed. Removal is a minor retribution for all those victims. It would only be fitting to have a NATIVE American to stand in its place, especially one from Chumash Land.
A statue of Junipero Serra on stolen Chumash Land is an insult to an injury that still hasn’t healed. A statue of an enslaver won’t teach our children the history of the Indigenous People. Take them all down! AND CHANGE THE NAME NOW.
