Why this petition matters

According to Edmonton City Council Member Michael Janz "Vehicles are consciouslly being tuned up by the driver to make them more annoying". This city council member is pushing for any exhaust modification to be illegal, along with fines possibly starting at $5000 as a bylaw or act; a DUI is likely to get you a $1000 fine as a first offence under the criminal code, which is not a bylaw or an act. How is it fair that youth and adults alike are no longer allowed to enjoy something they love due to the fact that it is deemed "annoying" by some. Instead of focusing on larger issues such as youth criminal code offenses or the growing homelessness and drug related crimes, these city council members and Edmonton City police officers continue to target members of the car community who are just trying to have a good time and participate in a hobby they enjoy. It is outrageous that the police are trying to shut these youth down via absurd tickets that they likely cannot afford. The car community continues to grow and bring people together regardless of race, religion, colour, creed and sexual orientation via media such as Initial D, Fast & Furious, Top Gear, Transformers, Cars, etc. Modified vehicles have existed in pop culture for a very long time and it continues to allow the car community to grow globally but unlike a majority of the world, Edmonton Police Services and City Council have been trying to outlaw any vehicle of the sort; Modified Vehicle Checkstops, deliberate targeting of modifies vehicles, "camping" outside of car meet/event locations in order to ticket citizens, etc. It is time to fight and win our right to own and modify these cars.
