Sharon McDonnell started this petition to VB City Council

Our Police Chief of 10+ years, James Cervera, is being forced to retire in April because he will turn 65. Medical and Social Research indicate that, “essentially, 70 is the new 60.” Thanks to modern science, those who encompass our work force are living longer, healthier lifestyles.

City Council has the ability to change the retirement age back to 70. Chief Cervera has spent 41 years serving the people of Virginia Beach. If there’s an event being held, you’ll see him there. With the announcement for “Something in the Water” many voiced concerns that past disturbances and crowding issues would  ensue. With Chief’s participation in planning, the event was fun, safe and pleasant.

The violence that shocked us all brought out the best in our Chief. Many people commented on his presence, kindness and class act in the face of tragedy.  41 years of experience should not be cast aside but used for additional training that provides new advancement opportunities for younger officers. If Council wants to retain officers, vote to give them a salary commensurate with the dangers that go along with the job.

The sheriff requested his retirement change to 65 while the retirement age of his staff is 70.

Chief Cervera wants to work until he is 70. His experience and education will benefit all in his department.  Council owes him a debt of gratitude and a ruling to grant him this request.
