Why this petition matters

Started by Chandler Alexander

Vanderbilt has elected to not allow Returner's Rights to students living in residential colleges for their first year during the 2021-2022 year. This issue most affects the Sophomores, a class that has already faced the debacle of the infamous "Flip" and entered Vanderbilt during the peak of COVID-19, we have already been through enough. However, this issue also extends to Juniors who first took residence this year. Residential colleges are suppose to be a place where individuals find community for several years. The basis behind Returner's Policy is that we are allowed to remain in these community so that we can steadily build upon what we have created. In fact, Vanderbilt states on their site for residential colleges (https://www.vanderbilt.edu/residentialcolleges/) that residential colleges are meant for "promoting the development of intellect, COMMUNITY, personal well-being, self-discovery, and personal awareness." (Vanderbilt) However, their choice to discontinue Returner's Policy for first-year residential students shows that they are not concerned about our community that we have built. Why should these first-year residential college students have to go through another housing lottery and not be granted the Returner's Rights that have been granted to residents for years on end?
