Paul McEwen started this petition to Vancouver Park Board

Recently an exciting art installation from Vancouver’s Biennale has been torpedoed by local NIMBY’s. The artwork depicts a young boy holding a shark, and is meant to draw attention to the destruction of climate change. Shark Boy was to be installed near the False Creek seawall, but local residents torpedoed the public work with concerns about property values. Owning property in an area does not (or should not) give veto power over the public parks nearby, and a moneyed elite shouldn’t be the final say for what is to be enjoyed by all Vancouverites.

Fortunately there is a simple workaround!
We can simply bring Shark boy to another part of the sea wall! Sunset beach? English Bay? Daresay Kits Beach?

Let the people decide! Renters, children, students, seniors, everyone. Let’s have big city participatory democracy, not elitism and class based decision making.
