Say No! to Epic Games!
Say No! to Epic Games!
PC gamers rise up! There is evil among us and it takes the form of Epic Games!!! For years, Steam has been our home. Sure it has its fair share of problems, but it has always been an excellent platform for us to find games, developers, and other gamers. I personally like to think of it as more than just my home but as a sanctuary. Steam has done as much as, if not more than video games themselves to help me get through life's tough times. Because Steam is not just an online video game distributor, it's an entire social media platform that provided me the tools I used to build friendships across vast distances and even across boarders and oceans. Steam... it is a gosh darn phenomenon. But it is under threat.
I'm sure you've all heard of Fortnite. If you're a parent... well, Fortnite is the reason your wallet feels lighter. This game makes EA look good. Well I'm not here to address my problem with that game; however, the game does contribute to my reasons for this petition. Anyways, Fortnite's developer, Epic Games, has recently started its own online video game storefront. Epic Games is now trying to compete with Valve for video game publishers. Now this might not be seen as much of a problem. We've seen this kind of thing before with companies like Blizzard and EA's Origin. But Epic Games is the largest threat to Steam's safety yet.
I suppose the hay that broke the camel's back was Epic Games recent purchase of the developer Psyonix. I have personally clocked almost 1000 hours in Psyonix's game, Rocket League, since I started playing it back in early spring of 2017. During that time, I have come to love the game. Everything about it just makes me want to keep playing it over and over. But now this game, one of my favorite games, is in the hands of a company that only got rich off of a game based on a fad of a genera that has become so over-saturated with triple-a titles in such a small time that it seems to be dying as fast as it was born (just look at Apex Legends). And if that's the case, then what is the future of Rocket League or any of the other games Epic Games decides to buy off with the money it takes from thousands of 5-year-olds' parents? And I'm haven't even touched on the fact that Epic Games might also completely remove Rocket League and possibly more games in the future from Steam entirely!
Sorry. I'm getting carried away by my emotions. I don't mean to be piggybacking off of the anti-Fortnite bandwagon. I just see this Psyonix buyout as a warning of things to come. And the last thing I want is the PC gaming community being torn apart by a civil war between Valve and Epic Games. I don't expect Epic Games to just stop doing what they're doing because of this petition, but maybe we can raise awareness of the possibly rough road ahead and maybe Valve will see this and decide to put more effort into fixing their own problems that are causing developers to join Epic Games in the first place. So please, fellow gamers, let's stop this before it gets out of hand.
Come join my movement!
