In order to promote a message of healthy living and establish a sense of an interconnected school family between students, Valley Stream South High School should adopt a practice of having students being able to use the gym facilities during school breaks and after school teams' practices. VSS already has adopted this practice by allowing students and outside community members to use the turf football field and track as a public park. Students can be responsible to bring their own sports equipment while being allowed to use the basketball hoops and surrounding space within the gymnasium, along with having school IDs to present to security. I propose that the gym be open during the times that the turf field is open to the public so that school security can still operate within the same hours. This practice allows for students to enjoy leisure time in a safe space that promotes exercise and healthy living. Student athletes also would have an opportunity to continue to practice and scrimmage with others in a fully functioning gym.
