The purpose of this petition is simply to support the Bringing Back the Y's Initiative to establish a full service YMCA in the waterfront port city of Vallejo, California. For those of you who are unfamiliar with our town, it is the largest of the 11 cities incorporated within the Solano County Region of the San Francisco Bay Area. The city's ongoing involvement in the nationally based arts, sports and hip hop scene has solidified Vallejo's position as a West Coast hotbed for musical and cultural innovation.
DID YOU KNOW:
The following national figures were all born and raised in Vallejo,Ca: CC Sabathia (baseball ball player), Jeff Gordon( race car driver),E-40 (rapper),and Baby Bash (rapper). We are all so proud of these home town heroes : )
Vallejo, CA is amongst the most ethnically diverse city in the entire US of A! This is truly something to be proud of : )
Though the above statements are true, giving us a lot to celebrate as a city, there are a number of ongoing truths that simply CANNOT continue to be ignored if we are to continue to grow.
IT CANNOT BE IGNORED THAT MANY OF OUT YOUTH ARE STRUGGLING.
Within the last couple of months, there has been a noticeable increase in youth enacted crimes within the city. Such crimes include armed burglary, drug trafficking, and shoplifting. Research indicates that children who are exposed to criminal activity suffer vicarious trauma. These children have a more difficult time succeeding in school and as adults.
IT CANNOT BE IGNORED THAT THESE STRUGGLING YOUTH ARE CRYING OUT FOR SUPPORT.
Children who engage in negative behaviors such as those stated above are often attention seeking, neglected, or suffering from emotional issues. Furthermore, there peers suffer through viewing there engagement in such violence. Investing in all of our children will benefit the community as a whole.
IT CANNOT BE IGNORED THAT SOLANO COUNTY IS THE ONLY OF ALL BAY AREA COUNTIES THAT DOES NOT HAVE A YMCA.
The last YMCA in Solano County closed its doors in 2008. This is problematic because the typical YMCA facility brings the following services to a community at affordable rates; multi-culturally based youth development and leadership programs, a full service gym, a full service pool, pro-rated child care/preschool services, and mental health/ social services.
LET'S MAKE THIS A REALITY BECAUSE VALLEJO'S YOUTH AND FAMILIES DESERVE IT!
Please sign this petition as it belongs to the community. Those who do not live within the immediate community but would like to extend a hand of support are welcome to sign it as well.
Thank you for your time,
