We are deeply concerned and annoyed at the Vale of Glamorgan’s Cabinet’s decision taken on the 17th September for a proposed gypsy and travellers site at Hayeswood rd Sully. It’s understood this site was never a preferred option and that it was earmarked for light industrial or housing. In fact, the proposed site, which is close to a number of homes along Hayes Road, was allocated for 55 new houses under the local development plan adopted by the council in June last year.
We in Sully and the surrounding area, understand the Vale needs to provide a suitable site for the gypsy and travellers community, but this is not it. The project would cost £2.3 million pounds and would cover an area of approximately 1.9 acres and feature 20 plots, a play area, office/community space. A dedicated full time manager would be on site to ensure the area is supervised. However that is only during office hours and there’s concern of increased anti social behaviour in the evenings and weekends. The council also expects site fees to be insufficient to cover all the costs of the site, meaning local tax payers will be left to foot the bill.
The proposed site is very close to an industrial estate, and one firm which had planned to set up in the area, is now reconsidering it’s plans due to the promxity of this site. Ty Hafen hospice and Beechwood college for autistic students is also very close. What sort of impact is it going to have on them?
The current travellers settled at an illegal camp a mile away, have given the impression they do not want to go to a new site, and there’s real concern that the new camp will end up being used as a transit camp. The proposed site will have devasting impact on the quality of our lives, homes and the whole community of both Sully and HHayes road, urge the council to reconsider this scheme.
