Why is there no relaxation of sentences for those with non-violent Marijuana charges against them? With Marijuana being decriminalized in Virginia on Wednesday, July 1, 2020, there are still many women and men incarcerated on a charge or multiple charges involving Marijuana. These people are not criminals, whether they use or sell the plant. It’s a plant, which means it’s a part of nature, that hasn’t harmed anyone but in fact has made a positive impact on many lives. The only “life ruining” thing that has come from the sale and use of the plant is the unfair charge placed upon those incarcerated. We would like to see those incarcerated return home to their families and friends soon.
In 2019, Virginia saw its highest number of Marijuana involved arrest in the last 20 years, a number scraping the bottom of 29,000 with a large percentage of those arrest being ‘possession’. These arrests are stuck with these people for the rest of their lives when there are much worse things being done out there, real crimes. Not to mention the racial disparity in these arrests: African-Americans are SIX times more likely to be arrested on a Marijuana charge than any other race and that has been statistically proven.
Please sign this petition to help in the fight of releasing those incarcerated on non-violent Marijuana charges. Thank you.
