Could YOU be on your own at age 18?

We believe foster children, many of whom have experienced significant trauma, should not be expected to support themselves at age 18.

The 43% of youth who age out of the foster care system at age 17 experience homelessness by age 21. This is not only a crisis for those who age out, but for the state governments which care for them. There are 29 states in the US which only guarantee foster care to children up until age 18. The lower the age, the higher chances children have of unemployment, homelessness, and incarceration. The 21 states which have implemented an aging out age of 21 have seen success rates for foster children drastically improve. If state governments invest in the lives of their children early, they won’t have to pay for the repercussions later. Help us to convince lawmakers in VA to move the aging out age to 21.

Peace and Love,

Amelia Metcalf, Sarah Zidlicky, and Nancy O'Gara
