Zero Suicide Bristol started this petition to Vice Chancellor (University of the West of England)

UWE has earned a worldwide reputation as places of learning, research, and education.

Over the last couple of years, however, Bristol’s universities have also earned a new and tragic reputation. Whilst official figures are difficult to obtain, it is believed that about a dozen students at the university have taken their own life during this period.

The zero suicide framework, based on the revolutionary work of the Henry Ford Health System in Michigan and later adopted by Mersey Care NHS Foundation, is a commitment by organisations like yourselves to deliver safer suicide care. It is based on the understanding that many victims of suicide fall between the cracks in existing systems and often don’t see a health professional.

Zero Suicide Bristol promotes the seven essential elements of the zero suicide framework, based on successful approaches to suicide reduction:

1.    Lead system-wide culture change committed to reducing suicides.

2.    Train a competent, confident, and caring workforce.

3.    Identify individuals with suicide risk via comprehensive screening and assessment.

4.    Engage all individuals at-risk of suicide using a suicide care management plan.

5.    Treat suicidal thoughts and behaviours using evidence-based treatments.

6.    Transition individuals through care with warm hand-offs and supportive contacts.

7.    Improve policies and procedures through continuous quality improvement.

It is our firm belief that, if implemented and maintained, both your institutions could achieve the worthy ambition of zero suicides.

Zero Suicide Bristol hopes that you will embrace this framework and we offer our assistance in helping with delivering this new and ambitious philosophy. We want Bristol to become a zero suicide city and that begins with ensuring our universities regain their reputation as excellent centres of learning.
