Student Climate Culture, UVM's student-run fossil fuel divestment initiative, advocates that the University of Vermont divest its endowment of the top 200 publicly traded fossil fuel companies. We know that burning fossil fuels causes climate change; vulnerable communities in Vermont and around the world are already severely impacted by a rapidly warming planet. Our university is home to one of the nation’s leading environmental programs, and our mission statement identifies a commitment to both local and global justice, environmental protection and public service. Our investments must reflect these values. In funding and profiting from the fossil fuel industry, we affirm their license to lock us into an unsustainable and dangerous carbon-based future. Other universities, faith institutions, cities and pension funds have shown that divestment and reinvestment in socially and environmentally responsible companies is financially feasible. Fossil fuel divestment is an urgent moral imperative, and is an opportunity for UVM to take real leadership by acting at a scale that can address the complexity and urgency of climate change.
