Hello, my name is Annastacia Hammond and I am the representative of Utah for the “Save the Mommies” foundation. I was diagnosed with peripartum cardiomyopathy also known as PPCM five years ago due to lack of knowledge by doctors. I want to make it mandatory for cardiac testing such as BNP lab test, echocardiogram, etc to be done during the second and third trimester and 3 months postpartum to catch and treat heart failure before it claims another mommy. We have lost too many mothers, wife’s, daughters, aunts, even friends from this disease because doctors use the excuse that “you’re TOO young” or “it’s rare”, before they diagnose. I was 24 years old and healthy when I was pregnant with my second daughter. I knew something was wrong at 30 weeks gestation. I had 3+ pitting edema (fluid built up) in my feet and legs. I couldn’t breath while lying down, I had to sleep sitting straight up. I couldn’t even walk a few steps without being out of breath. My OBGYN and the nurses told me “it was NORMAL”. It’s not normal. I had my daughter at 36wks via emergency c-section. A week later I forced the ER to see me. I was still swollen and getting worse. I looked terrible. I was rushed in and attached to everything you could think of. I was finally seen just in time and had an echocardiogram done and got diagnosed with heart failure with my left ventricle working at only 15%. I was told if I wouldn’t have gone to the hospital when I did I would have died. I don’t want my story to be another mother’s tragedy. I have fought to be alive for my children and my family. I am a survivor who wants to make a difference and to save lives. Please sign this petition and help make my goal, to spread awareness and make this mandatory. Help me save a mommy.
