Thank you for taking the time to read this petition. This petition is an appeal to make our city's public spaces safer! The petition is: to put in place an ordinance or a law that prohibits the use of open carry weapons in public parks. I have brought this issue to the Salt Lake City Council and have been directed to bring the issue to the Utah State Legislature. I will be writing letters and sharing this petition with our representatives in the Utah House and Senate.

For context, allow me to tell a brief story about my recent walk in Sugarhouse park.

Two Saturdays ago, November 21, 2020, my friend and I took a walk in Sugarhouse Park to enjoy the afternoon sunshine. I had my 9 month old baby and dog, and she had her dog as well. As we walked the popular circle with many other Salt Lake folk that day, we were accosted by a long chain of vehicles carrying political signs and flags. My friend and I were wearing masks and many people in that group shouted at us to take off our masks. This was only slightly alarming compared to what we came across next.

Shortly after rounding the last turn, we saw that most of the vehicles had pulled over. Among those exiting the vehicles were several men carrying what appeared to be high caliber assault rifles. They stood by, along the side of the road, in a threatening manner. One man, holding his weapon slung across his shoulder, followed us as we walked, after I told him several times to back away and stop following us.

As we had to drive back through this rally to exit the park, my friend, who is Black, was verbally accosted by another armed man making direct racial threats of violence. He also used extremely vulgar language.

There are so many layers to this event that are troubling, it would take some time to break them all down. The most notable, in addition to the racially charged threats, is that my friend and I, two women and a baby, were unable to go safely on a walk in our own public neighborhood park. For this reason I am appealing to you today, to urge our council-people and lawmakers, to put in place an ordinance or a law that prohibits the use of open carry weapons in public parks. I think we can all agree, regardless of political view or party, race or gender, that we should all feel safe taking a Saturday afternoon walk in the park.
