ruth ploeger started this petition to Utah State House and

Granite school district decided to close Brockbank Junior High school in Magna Utah. With that decision it put our young children walking down 8400 west, 8000 west, 7200 west and 3500 south. All of which are busy streets and most have direct freeway access. It's dangerous. We need to change at very least the way the state calculates walking distances to keep our children off busy and main roadways. For our children's safety I feel that walking more then half a mile on any busy street is to much. We have 12 year old children that need to be protected. By keeping them off the main roads we are lowering there chance of them being hit by a car. It will also lower there chance of being abducted.

I have been told by Dr. David Gatti Director of Transportation for Granite District and by Donald Adams Assistant Superintendent of Granite District that they are using the state mandated rules on transportation. I feel there needs to be an amendment that if a school was shut down in the area or if the children would have to walk more then a half mile on a busy street that the 2 mile rule should not apply. My 12 year old little girl would have only had to walk 10 min to the front doors of Brockbank Junior High school had they not closed it. So now they have chosen to close the school and she is forced to walk these dangerous roadways. I feel that they should have to make bigger concessions to keep these children safe.

So please sign this petition to help keep all of our children safe. If we can get this rule changed it would help keep all our Utah children safe, not just the children in Magna. Thank you for taking the time to read and sign this petition.
