Support Adapted PE in Utah Schools

Support Adapted PE in Utah Schools
Why this petition matters
Adapted physical education (APE) is specially designed instruction for students with disabilities who require modifications to participate safely and successfully in the physical education setting. Physical education is the only curricular area defined by IDEA to be provided to children with disabilities. If the general physical education setting is not the least restrictive environment for students with disabilities, a specially designed program must be provided by a qualified adapted physical educator in order to maintain the health and safety of our students. We are extremely concerned for the physical and social-emotional well-being of our most vulnerable student population. General physical education teachers do not have the training or credentials to appropriately meet the unique needs of these students nor do the special educators as they have had no formal training in physical education. Some school districts in the State of Utah have no APE programs and some districts are discontinuing their adapted PE programs. By signing this petition, you are supporting APE programs that are taught by highly qualified adapted physical educators.
