Require midwives to obtain a license and insurance to legally practice in Utah.

The recent newborn deaths caused by midwife Vickie Sorensen have highlighted the problems with the direct entry midwifery practice act. You need a license and insurance to drive a car, but not to deliver a baby. Midwives are rallying behind Sorensen instead of the parents who had to bury their children. Its up to the rest of us to make common sense laws about midwives. They should need a license so the state can control who can practice and who cannot. Currently anyone can legally call themselves a midwife and set up shop. Midwives make mistakes like everyone else, and when it comes to childbirth the mistakes are costly and sometimes deadly. Midwives should carry malpractice insurance so they can compensate anyone harmed by them.
