Make 2000 W Safer for Our Kids!

On April 17th 2017 a preventable accident happened when a teenager was struck, and later died, in the crosswalk on 2000 W in Syracuse. This crosswalk is located between Syracuse Elementary School and Syracuse Junior High. Hundreds of kids cross this street every day. During school times there are crossing guards and slower speeds. Outside of those times this road has a 40 MPH speed limit and nothing to encourage drivers to pay attention and stop beyond lines on the road and a couple of signs. This is a treacherous area, one our kids should be able to traverse safely to go to their jobs, to spend time with friends, to participate in after school activities without the fear of a motor vehicle hitting them.
The proposed safety plan is to install an overhead flashing signal which is better but 1) Too little to late and 2) Still relies on drivers to PAY ATTENTION. With the impending widening of the road, I want to see our children OFF the street! This may mean a pedestrian bridge over the street or a tunnel dug under the street.
The state KNEW this crosswalk was a problem, the City of Syracuse told them for YEARS. By dragging their feet a life was lost.
If you believe like me please sign and share this petition. We have a voice and we can use it for positive change!
***I have been in contact with our State Representatives and have requested a face to face meeting with them as well as UDOT. I would like to show them the community agrees!****
