Commencement has been held twice a year, at the end of the spring and fall semesters. However, the UTTyler nursing program accepts students three times a year during the spring, summer, and fall terms. To ensure a smooth transition into practice after completing the fourth and final semester of nursing school, a summer commencement proves to be necessary considering the busyness immediately after nursing school, including NCLEX prep and hospital tours.

After discussing the benefits of this possible idea, my peers and I have found it incredibly important to advocate for a better transition after our final semester, this upcoming August. A “better” transition includes an immediate commencement, rather than waiting three additional months to be recognized for our achievements. Many of us plan on leaving East Texas upon completion of our final semester, between traveling back and requesting days off, a December graduation proves to be problematic and our ability to make the adjustments could be compromised from our commitment for our careers.
