As a student, I eat on campus daily. I notice unnecessary waste every single time I eat out, whether it is at a dining hall, a campus chick fil a, Starbucks, or even the pot belly on Guadalupe. Cava is a great example that other eating establishments should follow. Their single-use utensils are made from plant waste, thats right, plants. Their disposable to-go bowls and "plastic" cups are all bio degradable. They even have a separate can for you to dump your food waste into so it can be composted locally, and your trash goes in the other. While the dining halls do have great composting options, their single-use items are simply unnecessary. The plastic to-go bags at JCL could easily be recyclable paper bags, a change many grocery stores have made in recent years. Establishments like Chick Fil a could change their distributor and order single-use utensils from a more environmentally conscious source. The napkins could be from recycled paper, which I have seen before, and so could their to go bags instead of plastic. While UT's campus has many great and accessible recycling options, I believe there are still many steps that could be taken to improve UT's carbon footprint.
