Allow volunteers to pick up our returned books from local post offices.

Books from Birth programs throughout Tennessee take the returned books and attempt to get updated addresses by calling or emailing the parents. We also use these books to supply community libraries and non-profits so they can deliver them directly to children in need. Since it costs the USPS valuable time and money to have them sent to be shredded, we are simply asking that David Dillman, Tennessee District Manager with the USPS, reconsider changing the policy that previously allowed Books from Birth volunteers to collect the returned books.

Letter to
Media Rep, USPS TN District David Walton
Tennessee District Manager, USPS David Dillman
On behalf of the 34,000 children who receive books through Books from Birth in Shelby County, volunteers who administer the program, and donors who pay for their delivery, we hope that you reconsider changing the policy that allowed volunteers to collect returned books from local post offices. We have always considered the USPS to be an important partner in this effort to build a community of readers. The previous District Manager in Tennessee saw value in the Imagination Library books and realized that by allowing volunteers to pick them up, they encouraged reading and also saved the Post Office valuable time and resources. We want to emphatically state how important the USPS is to the Books from Birth program and that we are not asking any Postal employee to do anything other than allow us to collect the returns.

We thank you for your leadership on this matter.
