Medical School started this petition to USMLE

Second year medical students across the globe are sitting right now. They’re sitting, staring at their screen, trying to remember which thyroid cancer has orphan Annie eyes. They’re sitting, thinking about their parents, grandparents, and friends who may be or fall ill. They’re sitting, devising plans to help their local community with babysitting for essential workers or making goggles. They’re sitting, grasping to find a reason as to why this test score matters more than the consequences of the pandemic.

As medical schools scramble to provide a path forward that allows us to graduate on time and accommodate our needs for Step 1, you have heard the plea to make Step 1 pass/fail to let us be with family who may die, to let us help the community, and to let us take care of our own mental states. We have seen your clipart response, but we can’t quite put on a finger on why the “stakeholders” bear greater importance than an intubated family member.

Now is the time to show empathy – a concept taught and practiced daily in medical schools. We are sitting here studying for an indefinite amount of time, when we should be standing with our community. You have the chance to be heroes and to teach us what you preach. Please show us empathy and make Step 1 pass/fail.
