Stop hermit crab pet trade
Why this petition matters

Here's Part of my essay: Hello, my name is Deanne Phillips and I’m here to talk about hermit crabs. As you can tell I care about hermit crabs. I’m here to spread awareness about hermit crabs, land hermit crabs. If you have ever heard about a hermit crab moreover a land hermit crab, you probably had it as a class pet or pet of your own. It died, didn’t it? Your teacher or parents probably brought to teach you about life and death. But really, you just killed a hermit crab that could have lived for 30 years or more. Hermit crabs are mistreated and shouldn’t be sold anymore. This is for several reasons. One, pet shops that sell them to people don’t give you the information you need to make your hermit crab thrive. Two, hermit crabs are neglected and people don’t know how to take care of them. Three, they are wild-caught. Four, barely anyone is doing anything to stop this.
First, pet shops that sell them to people don’t give you the information you need to make your hermit crab thrive. Most commonly, they will give you a sheet that they got on the internet. They don’t even do their research before giving people these “care sheets” that are usually missing an important piece of information. Or if they do take their time and do their research, they will still not care about giving the perfect care sheet to people. If they did their research, they wouldn’t be selling hermit crabs at all. Usually, they miss the part about what kind of sand and that they need coconut fiber. They also don’t talk about how much you need. They can also miss the part about how you need to keep the air in your hermit crab’s cage moist. This is very important to note because if you don’t your hermit crab will slowly suffocate to death. Land hermit crabs still have gills and need a moist environment to live in. They are like a rolly-pollies, they came out of the water and their gills got used to the air. But their need to be moist to work. That's why you’ll find rolly-pollies under logs. Some “care sheets” have all the information but don’t say the important stuff is important. Another thing about pet shops and gift shops is that they don’t sell you the right tank size. Gift shops are the worst at this. If notice in (usually in a gift shop) they don’t even have sand or the right amount. They also crowd the tank and give the hermit crabs tap water (that gives them blisters on their gills that slowly suffocates them.) This is how pet shops that sell them to people don’t give you the information you need to make your hermit crab thrive.
Another reason is that hermit crabs are neglected and people don’t know how to take care of them. I know how to take care of my hermit crabs because I did my research. But the thing is that I didn’t know how to take care of my hermit crab in the first 3 weeks. And I only got the right tank size and the right amount of sand in that tank 3 months into having my hermit crab. The reason that George my first hermit crab lasted so long is because I did have a friend for him but he killed him. So he wasn’t alone the whole time he is here. George killed Alex (that was name I had for him) because the “tank” that the gift shop gave me was too small. The were fighting over the space (land hermit crabs are very territorial.) The gift shop didn’t tell me this so I didn’t know how to take care of my hermit crabs. Most people don't research.
