Jana Monji started this petition to USC Marshall School of Business and

USC Marshall School of Business professor Greg Patton should be reinstated in his communications management course(s).

Professor Patton was suspended from teaching classes after Black students were offended by his usage of a common Mandarin Chinese word: 那个 (nèige). The professor used the word correctly as a pause or hedge word and the word is not considered offensive in Chinese. How he pronounced it or if he pronounced it according to standard Beijing dialect or Putonghua (普通话) is irrelevant.

If the USC Marshall School of Business is going to prepare students to do business in Los Angeles which has a sizable population of Chinese Americans, and in the global economy where Chinese make up 1/5 of the world population and 955 million people speak Mandarin Chinese and Mandarin Chinese is the most widely spoken language in the world, then it is necessary and should be obligatory that such examples be brought up. Further, the students, including Black students should be given sensitivity training toward Asians and Asian Americans. The offended Black students have essentially failed their first lesson in cross cultural business dealings and have obviously not considered how offensive their actions are toward Asians and Asian Americans.

In this instance, I fully support Professor Greg Patton and believe the Black students and the university owe him an apology.
