On 27 October, 2017, the Catalan Republic or Catalunya/Catalonia unilaterally declared independence from the Kingdom of Spain, following human rights abuses and acts of tyranny from the central government of Madrid.
The State Department of the United States has failed to recognise the sovereignty of the Catalan people, whose right to self-determination has been trampled. The Spanish government has also taken steps to stigmatise the Catalan culture and language, including the breaking-up of Catalan communities in La Franja d'Aragó, and the intentional downplaying of Catalan national identity in Valencia and the Baleares.
In responding to the independence referendum with violence, the Spanish government has also stepped over the human rights and dignity of the people of Catalunya/Catalonia.
Here is the Text of the Declaration of Independence, translated from Catalan into English for convenience.
Here is an article from Human Rights Watch detailing the infractions committed by the Spanish government in dealing with democratic process in Catalunya/Catalonia.
