US Soccer: Please Boycott Slave Labor at Qatar's 2022 World Cup

Dear Sunil Gulati,

First, thank you for your service to American soccer, and for your hard work representing our interests with FIFA.

Surely at this point, it has come to your attention that the infrastructure for the 2022 games in Qatar is being built with slave labor. Investigators identified more than 44 Nepalese workers who died in a two-month period, and at least 404 migrant laborers died this year. To construct the complete infrastructure for the 2022 World Cup will cost an estimated 4,000 lives.

Laws in Qatar protect human traffickers to such a degree that no assurances from Qatar, inspectors, or FIFA can prevent further abuse. Under Qatar’s Kafala system, workers may not legally take other work or leave the country without their employer's permission. If an employer does abuse laborers, they remain dependent on their abuser for financial survival. No inspections will change that these workers are powerless. Human trafficking will always flourish under Kafala laws.

Slavery is morally reprehensible. US Soccer should not support slavery or participate in events produced with slave labor. Please tell FIFA you will boycott the Qatar games, unless Qatar eliminates the Kafala system. As long as Qatar’s laws force victims to depend on their traffickers, it is no fit place for the world stage.
