Global Amhara Council is deeply disturbed by the shocking human rights violation perpetrated by the Tigrean ethnic dominated government of Ethiopia and the abysmal state of its governance.
The Government’s Security forces have killed thousands of innocent Ethiopians and continue to kill principally in the Amhara, Oromia, Gambella and Somali regions of our country. Tens of thousands of people are detained. Security officials of the regime torture prisoners of conscience and commit rape and other degrading insults on women and young girls.
According to Human Rights Watch report of February 21, 2016, heavily armed force of the regime dubbed “Agazi” have killed over 200 demonstrators using lethal force such as firing live ammunition into large crowds of unarmed demonstrators, throwing grenades at university students, arbitrarily rounding up and detaining in tens of thousands of young Amhara and Oromo students to unknown sites.
In 2016 the US Department of State Country Report on Human Rights Practices for Ethiopia cited serious human rights violations, including arbitrary arrests, killings, and torture committed by security forces, restrictions on freedom of expression and freedom of association, politically motivated trials, harassment, and intimidation of opposition members and journalists.
On 7th July 2017, a letter expressing concerns for the human rights situation in Ethiopia, signed by 38 Members of the European Parliament (MEPs), was addressed to European Union High Representative. Highlighting the violent suppression of protests by the Ethiopian State, the letter, in line with the European Parliament resolution passed in May 2017, calls for an independent investigation into the killings of protesters.
In its 115th Session of the Congress, the US House of Representatives have passed unanimously Resolution H. RES 128 supporting respect for human rights and encouraging inclusive governance in Ethiopia. This bill for your vote will be a breakthrough resolution to let the Government of Ethiopia and its officials respect for human rights and an all-inclusive governance.
Your vote in favor of HR 128, will be a clear demonstration and support for the Ethiopian people in order to gain its confiscated freedom for peaceful transition into democratic institutions.
Thank you for your support.
