DISCLAIMER: THIS PETITION WAS WRITTEN BY THE AUTHOR IN MY OWN PERSONAL CAPACITY. IT DOES NOT REFLECT THE VIEWS, OPINIONS OR THOUGHTS OF MY EMPLOYER OR ANY OTHER ORGANIZATION. I AM WRITING AS A CONCERNED AMERICAN CITIZEN AND A FACULTY MEMBER IN HIGHER EDUCATION IN THE UNITED STATES.

I teach for the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education, and both on my campus, and in my professional interactions with other literature professors, scholars and students, I have the good fortune to teach and interact with students, faculty and staff from several countries in Africa, and Haiti and El Salvador. I consider them valuable colleagues and responsible students.

With this petition, I respectfully ask the US House and the Senate to publicly censure the president of the United States for his racist slurs against the people of Africa, Haiti and El Salvador. Censure and public rectification are necessary to uphold the tarnished dignity and moral face of the United States directly created by the president's racist remarks in the larger world context.

I further request and encourage each university, college, and institution of higher education in the world to celebrate the literatures and cultures of Africa, Haiti and El Salvador. There are several things you can do mindfully to rectify the president's vulgar and racist conduct:

  • Organize a book festival by authors from Africa, Haiti, and El Salvador on your campuses.
  • Ask your librarian to display the literatures of Africa, Haiti, and El Salvador.
  • Plan a reading on your campus on the literatures of Africa, Haiti and El Salvador.
  • Celebrate Africa day, Haiti Day and El Salvador day on your campuses.

Thank you. Please share this petition with your colleagues and friends, and on your social media.

Sincerely

Dr. Gayatri Devi, Lock Haven, Pennsylvania 17745
