This aggressive management action will result in the killing of the barred owl. While the barred owl does have negative impacts on Spotted Owl populations, this strategy does not provide an effective long-term solution to the recovery challenge for the Spotted Owl. Although challenging, nonlethal alternatives are available to relocate Barred Owls in order to preserve existing populations of Spotted Owls. It is not clear that allowing relocated owls to compete within saturated habitat is less ethical than killing them outright.
