The political situation in Georgia is rapidly deteriorating. Chances for the country of becoming a democratic state are disappearing for many decades, if not forever. Georgian Dream, led by oligarch Ivanishvili, is quickly and irreversibly destroying democratic institutions and pulling the country back into the Russian orbit.

President Mikheil Saakashvili is imprisoned on politically motivated charges. In an unprecedented political and inhumane retribution, President Saakashvili, on his 37th day of hunger strike is deprived of adequate medical care. His health is worsening by hour. He needs adequate medical intervention urgently and must be transferred to a general hospital! The Government of Georgia must protect and ensure prisoner Saakashvili’s right to life, the most fundamental of rights!

We urge the US Embassy to Tbilisi and the EU Delegation to Georgia to act decisively with all the tools at their disposal to save President Saakashvili's life. Silence is no longer an option. Please do not let one of the greatest reformers and statesmen die in jail on your watch.
