Columbus Division of Police has a long history of using excessive and deadly force against residents in Columbus, Ohio. Black people are disproportionately harmed and/or killed by Columbus Division of Police. According to This Scorecard Columbus, Ohio has: 

^  More Killings by Police per Arrest than 99% of Departments

^  More Racial Disparities in Deadly Force than 74% of Departments  

^  More Unarmed People Killed per Arrest than 86% of Departments 

This Scorecard demonstrates that

^ The [CDP] has killed 48 people from 2013 to 2021, according to     policescorecard.org

^ 8% of those killed were unarmed

^ There have been more than 4,000 civilian complaints against [CDP]

^ Officer Ricky Anderson shot and killed Donovan Lewis on Tuesday, Aug. 30

^ Anderson was put on administrative leave

Black people are not safe in Columbus, Ohio. Not only are residents of the city in danger, there is a culture of racial discrimination and harassment inside the Division. For decades, the Division has avoided accountability and police killing is increasing. In 2021, Mayor Andrew Ginther averted a Pattern or Practices Investigation while leading the city to believe that an investigation was boing done. Instead of a Pattern or Practices Investigation by the Civil Rights Division of the US Department of Justice, there was a review by the Community Oriented Policing Services which brought no change and more Black people were killed by police. We need a Pattern or Practices Investigation and a consent decree with thorough oversight in order to stop this cycle of state sanctioned violence.
