US Dept. of State: Investigate SCAF for Deaths of 24 Egyptian Civilians

US Dept. of State: Investigate SCAF for Deaths of 24 Egyptian Civilians

The Issue

On October 9th, 2011, the Egyptian Army, which receives $1.3 Billion of US military assistance every year, violently attacked a peaceful civilian protest in front of Maspero, the Egyptian State TV building. Eyewitness accounts, videos, and autopsies have confirmed that over 24 people were killed, some by being crushed under Armored Personnel Carriers driven deliberately into protesters by army officers, and some by gunshot fired by the army. Over 300 people were injured during this attack.  On April 9, 2011, the army similarly attacked a peaceful protest on Tahrir Square, where 2 were killed by gunshot and 15 wounded.

US public money is being used to fund an army that is killing its own citizens while they engage in their right to peacefully protest. This Egyptian army is not only responsible for the deaths of these Egyptian citizens, but it incited sectarian violence on Egyptian state television by falsely claiming that three army officers were killed by the protesters, and that "all honorable Egyptians" should take to the streets to "protect" the army.

These crimes can no longer be supported by the US government. Call for the US government to stop it's funding of the Egyptian army until an INDEPENDENT investigation is held and the perpetrators of this violence are brought to justice.
