From Massachusetts to Michigan, From New York to New Orleans, thousands of Black teachers are being “structured out” of the Education field. For instance, over 6,000 Black teachers lost their jobs in the Chicago Public Schools (CPS) between 2010 and 2013. In 3 years can 6,000 educators become incompetent? Would 6,000 educators decide to retire all at once? In addition to the 7,000 in New Orleans after Katrina, thousands more voiceless, dedicated, effective teachers of African descent have been disenfranchised nationwide. Massive termination of African-American teachers since the mid-1990s needs an explanation. We need the following investigations:
We need to see an investigation on how E3s or Corrective Actions are executed.
We need to see an investigation on possible repercussions on African American teachers who advocate against the expulsions and suspensions of Black students;
We need to see an investigation on pseudo evaluations performed on teachers who care a lot to get involved and help students get the resources they need;
We are demanding that government look into practices that attorneys and school districts do that are not in compliance with the law, i.e. bring unsubstantiated charges against teachers; require forced to resign tenured teachers and long term staff to sign papers to remain silent and not to file lawsuits;
Lastly, we are asking why thousands of teachers who pay union dues over several decades are unable to get due process by our collective bargaining. In other words, the unions have not protected us.
The decimation of Black teachers for the last 60 years since Brown v. Board of Education decision is an issue that had remained silent for too long. We need an investigation done and the overturn of all “suspicious” dismissals of tenured teachers and long term staff that occurred in the past fifteen years.
Dear Petition Signers,
CAUSE , Coalition and Alliance of Urban School Educators is investigating the situation with the Atlanta teachers who will be sentenced in the cheating scandal. We are doing a comparative analysis of similar cheating scandals across the country. We ask, does the punishment fit the crime? Please stay tuned for other information. We will be creating a crowdfunding site for the teachers and their families involved in this scandal.
